We’re incredibly proud of our trained community health volunteers from “Samahan Tungosa Maayos na Tahanan at Hanapbuhay” (SMTH) for leading the successful “Monitoring Hypertension and Diabetes” training in Tondo, Manila, at Building 11 on July 22nd! This event had a significant impact, with 28 Tondo residents, 13 SMTH volunteers, 4 children and our health project staff (GMF Joyce in collaboration with Ms. Renz) actively participating.
Key objectives were met with great success:
Awareness Raised: Participants gained a deeper understanding of hypertension and diabetes, including their causes, symptoms, and prevention strategies. Real-life examples and DoH-approved materials ensured they left with actionable knowledge.
Improved Monitoring Skills: Hands-on demonstrations allowed participants to practice taking blood pressure and glucose measurements accurately. This session resulted in greater confidence in monitoring these health conditions at home.
Early Detection: A life-saving moment occurred when one participant was found to have significantly high blood glucose levels. Immediate follow-up was recommended, underscoring the critical need for regular health checks in the community.
Promoting Healthy Lifestyles: The interactive sessions not only emphasized lifestyle changes but also empowered participants to take control of their health for long-term benefits.
This initiative is a testament to the hard work and accountability of our health volunteers, who handled everything from ideation, project design, execution, to financial liquidation. Their meticulous planning and transparent use of resources have set a new standard of excellence for community-driven projects!
We couldn’t be prouder of how they continue to take the lead in promoting health and wellness in their community. Tondo is on the path to becoming healthier and more self-sufficient!
However, we share this with heavy hearts: Building 11, where we hosted this training and our SNP classroom, was recently devastated by a fire, leaving many of our community partners homeless and deeply affected.
We urgently need your support! While we are receiving some help, the road to recovery for our community members is long, and we want to make this process as smooth as possible for them. Any donations—no matter how small—will go a long way in helping these families rebuild their lives. We truly value them and will not let them go through this alone.
Please consider donating to help us provide relief and recovery for our Tondo community.
